At the location of the Protestant Hospital Duisburg-Nord, the Department of Surgical Therapy of Terminal Heart Failure under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. med. Dr. h.c. Reiner Körfer and Prof. Dr. med. med. Gero Tenderich settled.

Here, all interventions for the surgical therapy of congenital and acquired diseases of the heart in adult age are carried out with and without the aid of extracorporeal circulation. In addition, simultaneous and non-simultaneous interventions are performed on the large arteries near the heart.

In addition to the full range of adult cardiac surgery, our focus is on the surgical treatment of end-stage heart failure with implantation of cardiovascular support systems as well as artificial hearts (ECMOs, Ventricular Assist Devices, Total Artificial Heart) with the care and attention of patients. The department has quickly positioned itself as an internationally recognized center with expertise across Europe in this field.
